How to Prepare Your Furnace for the Winter

Winter is when your furnace works the hardest. It's also the time when you most need the warmth it provides in your house. In order to avoid an unpleasant surprise just when temperatures are dropping, take the following steps now to prepare your furnace for the winter.

1. Check and Change Your Filter

Most furnaces have a filter. The filter, located over the intake vent on your furnace, helps to keep dust, dirt, debris and even fur from household pets, out of the furnace mechanism. If the furnace filter gets clogged from all these airborne particles, the intake vent can't work properly, and your furnace can't work efficiently. Worse, it may malfunction permanently, causing untold damage and expenses.

Locate your furnace filter, remove it, and check the size. A new filter can be purchased from department and hardware stores. Simply insert the new one and make sure you check the filter at least once a month in the future.

2. Have Your Vents and Ducts Cleaned

All the air that circulates in your home flows through the vents and ducts. That means that all the pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles, are finding their way into the rooms where you and your family live and play. Filters keep out a lot of it, but not all. Over time, airborne particles, and even mold can build up on the walls of your duct system, and on the gills of the vents in the house.

Hire a professional at least once a year in the fall to clean your ducts and vents. This will ensure that your furnace is well prepared to heat your home for winter in the healthiest way.

These two simple steps will keep your furnace working well for many winters to come. If you're looking for professional furnace maintenance services, contact All Pro today!
