Do I Need a New Thermostat?

Do I Need a New Thermostat?

When it comes to a malfunctioning thermostat, there are basically only three different scenarios at play:

  1. The thermostat's not working at all.
  2. It's working intermittently (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).
  3. The thermostat isn't functioning properly (it's either over or under-cooling your home).

What can cause these scenarios to occur? What can you do to fix the problem? How can you tell the difference between a thermostat that's gone bad and requires replacement, versus a defective HVAC system that will be much more costly and labor-intensive to address? We'll cover all of this next.

How to Tell If Your Thermostat Is Broken

If your thermostat isn't hardwired, try replacing the batteries first. Even if the battery indicator isn't on, lower-than-ideal battery levels can sometimes cause all kinds of weird problems, so start there.

If that didn't solve the problem, remove the faceplate (this usually doesn't involve more than disengaging a plastic clip or undoing a couple small screws. Then, look for any dust or grease buildup, loose wires, or broken parts. If you feel comfortable, this debris can often be removed with a can of compressed air, and loose wires can be easily tightened down with a screwdriver.

After doing all of this, is your thermostat still not responding? Or if it is responding, is it not controlling your HVAC system properly? This could indicate you need a new thermostat, or it could indicate that the underlying problem is elsewhere.

In either instance, this is an ideal time to call All Pro AC and Heating. We'll have one of our technicians at your home in no time, who can use their knowledge and experience to diagnose the problem and get you back up and running. Give us a call today at (254) 624-4917!
